Red mite

Red mite refers to several species of mites that are significant pests in agriculture and animal husbandry, affecting the health and productivity of poultry and other birds. The most notable species among these is Dermanyssus gallinae, commonly known as the poultry red mite or chicken mite. These mites are ectoparasites, living on the skin of their hosts, and can cause a range of issues from skin irritation to the transmission of diseases.

Description

Red mites are small arachnids, typically less than 1mm in size, making them just visible to the naked eye. They have a red or reddish-brown color after feeding but are otherwise greyish-white. These mites are nocturnal, feeding on the blood of their hosts during the night and hiding in cracks, crevices, and other sheltered spots during the day.

Life Cycle

The life cycle of the red mite includes several stages: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. Under optimal conditions, the entire cycle can be completed in as little as 7 days, allowing populations to increase rapidly.
