Ribbon Ridge AVA is an American Viticultural Area (AVA) located in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. It is both the smallest and most densely planted AVA in the state. The region is known for its unique geology and climate, which contribute to the distinctive characteristics of its wines.

The Ribbon Ridge AVA was established in 2005, making it one of the newer AVAs in Oregon. The region was named for the distinctive ridge that runs through the area, which is marked by a series of undulating ribbons of sedimentary rock. The AVA is located within the larger Willamette Valley AVA and Chehalem Mountains AVA.

Ribbon Ridge AVA is located in the northern part of the Willamette Valley, approximately 22 miles southwest of Portland. The AVA covers a total area of 3,350 acres, of which approximately 500 acres are planted with vineyards.

The region is characterized by its high elevation and steep slopes, which provide excellent drainage for vineyards. The soil in Ribbon Ridge AVA is primarily Willakenzie, a type of sedimentary soil that is particularly well-suited to viticulture.

The climate in Ribbon Ridge AVA is cooler and wetter than the surrounding areas, with an average annual rainfall of 40 inches. This cool, wet climate is ideal for growing Pinot noir and Chardonnay, the two primary grape varieties grown in the region.

Ribbon Ridge AVA is home to several notable wineries, including Beaux Freres, Patricia Green Cellars, and Bergstrom Wines. These wineries are known for producing high-quality Pinot noir and Chardonnay wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region.

The vineyards in Ribbon Ridge AVA are planted at high densities, with an average of 1,600 vines per acre. This high density planting results in lower yields per vine, but the resulting grapes are more concentrated in flavor.

The wines produced in Ribbon Ridge AVA are known for their depth of flavor and complexity. The Pinot noir wines from this region are often described as having a dark fruit profile, with notes of black cherry, blackberry, and plum. The Chardonnay wines from Ribbon Ridge AVA are typically full-bodied and rich, with flavors of apple, pear, and citrus. They often have a creamy texture and a long, lingering finish.
