The city of Saint Charles was founded in 1769 by French-Canadian fur trader Louis Blanchette. Originally named "Les Petites Côtes" (The Little Hills), it served as a trading post for fur trappers and explorers. In 1804, the Lewis and Clark Expedition passed through the area on their journey to explore the western territories of the United States.
During the 19th century, Saint Charles played a significant role in the westward expansion of the United States. It served as the starting point for many pioneers heading west on the Oregon Trail and the California Trail. The city also became a center for manufacturing and commerce, with industries such as tobacco, brick-making, and milling.
