Salt and ice challenge hand day 11

Salt and Ice Challenge is a internet phenomenon and physical endurance game that gained popularity in the 2010s. The challenge involves participants applying salt to their skin and then placing ice on the salted area. The combination of salt and ice creates a eutectic frigorific mixture which can quickly reduce the temperature of the ice to much lower than its normal freezing point, intensifying the cold sensation experienced by the participant. This can lead to frostbite or other cold-related injuries in a very short amount of time.

Overview[edit | edit source]

The Salt and Ice Challenge typically involves individuals applying a generous amount of table salt to a part of their body, usually the arm or hand. An ice cube is then placed on the salted area. The challenge is to withstand the resulting pain for as long as possible. The reaction between the salt and ice mixture causes a thermal reaction that can quickly cool to temperatures as low as -17 degrees Celsius (1.4 degrees Fahrenheit), leading to a burning sensation similar to holding ice alone but much more intense due to the lower temperature.

Risks[edit | edit source]

The challenge poses significant health risks, including first to third-degree cold burns similar to frostbite. These injuries can result in permanent nerve damage, scarring, and in severe cases, require amputation. The rapid cooling also numbs the area, potentially leading participants to underestimate the severity of the injury until it is too late.

Media Attention and Public Response[edit | edit source]

The Salt and Ice Challenge has received widespread media attention, with numerous reports of injuries and hospitalizations. Health professionals and educators have issued warnings about the dangers associated with the challenge, emphasizing the potential for permanent injury. Despite these warnings, the challenge remains popular among teenagers and young adults, often circulated through social media platforms where participants share videos of their attempts.

Prevention and Education[edit | edit source]

Efforts to prevent injuries related to the Salt and Ice Challenge include education on the risks involved and the physiological effects of extreme cold on the skin. Parents, educators, and healthcare providers are encouraged to discuss the dangers of such challenges with young people, highlighting the long-term consequences that can arise from participating in seemingly harmless internet trends.
