The Soulard Farmers Market was established by Julia Soulard in the late 18th century. She donated the land to the city of St. Louis with the stipulation that it always be used as a public market. The market has been in operation ever since, surviving wars, depressions, and urban renewal.

The market is housed in a grand red brick building with a distinctive clock tower. Inside, there are four wings, each filled with vendors selling a variety of goods. The wings are named after famous St. Louisans: the Lewis Wing, the Clark Wing, the Laclede Wing, and the Chouteau Wing.
