TECAB

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

TECAB (Totally Endoscopic Coronary Artery Bypass) is a type of coronary artery bypass surgery that is performed using endoscopic techniques. This procedure is minimally invasive, as it is performed through small incisions in the chest. The TECAB procedure is performed using a robotic surgical system, which allows the surgeon to operate with enhanced precision and control.

Procedure[edit | edit source]

The TECAB procedure involves the use of a robotic surgical system, such as the da Vinci Surgical System. The surgeon controls the robotic arms from a console, guiding them to make small incisions in the chest. Through these incisions, the surgeon can access the heart and perform the bypass surgery.

The surgeon uses the robotic arms to harvest a healthy blood vessel, usually from the chest wall. This vessel is then attached to the blocked coronary artery, bypassing the blockage and restoring blood flow to the heart. The use of endoscopic techniques reduces the size of the incisions, which can lead to less post-operative pain and a faster recovery.

Benefits[edit | edit source]

The TECAB procedure offers several potential benefits over traditional coronary artery bypass surgery. These include:

  • Less post-operative pain
  • Faster recovery time
  • Reduced risk of infection
  • Less scarring
  • Shorter hospital stay

However, not all patients are suitable candidates for the TECAB procedure. Factors such as the patient's overall health, the severity of their coronary artery disease, and their suitability for robotic surgery will all be considered by the surgeon.

Risks[edit | edit source]

As with any surgical procedure, the TECAB procedure carries some risks. These may include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Damage to the heart or blood vessels
  • Blood clots
  • Stroke

Patients should discuss these risks with their surgeon before deciding to undergo the TECAB procedure.
