From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

TiHKAL: The Continuation is a book written by Alexander Shulgin and Ann Shulgin which was published in 1997. It is the sequel to PiHKAL: A Chemical Love Story and, like its predecessor, is divided into two parts. The title stands for "Tryptamines I Have Known And Loved".

Overview[edit | edit source]

The first part of TiHKAL is a fictionalized autobiographical account of the authors' experiences with tryptamine hallucinogens. It provides insights into the personal lives of the Shulgins, their encounters with various psychedelics, and the profound impact these substances had on their lives and relationship. This narrative is interwoven with reflections on the nature of consciousness, love, and the societal implications of psychedelic use.

The second part of the book is a detailed manual on the chemistry of tryptamines, a class of psychoactive compounds that includes well-known substances such as DMT, psilocybin, and LSD. This section provides synthesis instructions for over 55 compounds, including detailed chemistry, dosage, duration, and personal comments on the effects of each substance, based on the authors' experiences. The chemical information is presented in a clear, straightforward manner, making it accessible to both professional chemists and amateur enthusiasts with a strong background in chemistry.

Significance[edit | edit source]

TiHKAL has had a significant impact on the field of psychedelic research and psychotherapy, providing a wealth of chemical and experiential data on tryptamines. It has also played a crucial role in the psychedelic renaissance, inspiring new generations of researchers and users to explore the therapeutic and spiritual potential of these substances. The book's detailed accounts of psychedelic experiences have contributed to a deeper understanding of the subjective effects of tryptamines and their potential for exploring the human psyche.

Controversy[edit | edit source]

The publication of TiHKAL, much like PiHKAL, was met with controversy. The detailed synthesis instructions for psychoactive substances raised concerns among law enforcement and regulatory agencies, leading to debates about the legality of disseminating such information. The Shulgins defended their work on the grounds of freedom of speech and the scientific value of their research, arguing that the exploration of consciousness and the therapeutic potential of psychedelics are of paramount importance.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

TiHKAL continues to be a seminal work in the field of psychedelic studies. It is not only a comprehensive guide to the chemistry of tryptamines but also a profound exploration of the human experience under the influence of these substances. The book has inspired countless individuals to explore the realms of consciousness and has contributed to the ongoing discussion about the role of psychedelics in society.
