Tracheostomy button

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Tracheostomy button is a medical device used in the management of tracheostomy, a surgical procedure that creates an opening in the neck for direct access to the trachea (windpipe). The tracheostomy button is designed to maintain the patency of the tracheostomy stoma (opening) when a tracheostomy tube is not in place.

Overview[edit | edit source]

A tracheostomy button is typically used in patients who have undergone a tracheostomy and are in the process of weaning off the tracheostomy tube. The button is a short, hollow tube that fits into the stoma to keep it open. It allows the patient to breathe through the stoma, but unlike a tracheostomy tube, it does not extend into the trachea.

Indications[edit | edit source]

The primary indication for a tracheostomy button is to maintain the patency of the tracheostomy stoma during the weaning process. It may also be used in patients who require intermittent use of a tracheostomy tube, such as those with sleep apnea or other conditions that intermittently affect the airway.

Procedure[edit | edit source]

The tracheostomy button is inserted into the stoma following the removal of the tracheostomy tube. The button is typically made of silicone or another flexible material, allowing it to conform to the shape of the stoma. The outer surface of the button may be coated with a lubricant to facilitate insertion.

Risks and Complications[edit | edit source]

As with any medical procedure, the use of a tracheostomy button carries some risks. These may include infection, bleeding, and damage to the stoma or surrounding tissues. There is also a risk that the button may become dislodged, potentially leading to airway obstruction.
