Trichophyton schoenleinii

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Trichophyton schoenleinii is a dermatophyte fungus that is known to cause tinea capitis, a type of scalp fungal infection, primarily in children. This fungus was first identified by Levin August Gottlieb Theophil Schoenlein in 1839, hence the name schoenleinii.

Taxonomy[edit | edit source]

Trichophyton schoenleinii belongs to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota, class Eurotiomycetes, order Onygenales, family Arthrodermataceae, genus Trichophyton.

Morphology[edit | edit source]

The colonies of Trichophyton schoenleinii are typically white to cream in color, with a suede-like to downy texture. The reverse side of the colony is usually pale or yellowish. The hyphae are septate and the conidia are typically round to oval in shape.

Pathogenicity[edit | edit source]

Trichophyton schoenleinii is a highly specialized pathogen, causing a specific type of tinea capitis known as favus. Favus is characterized by the formation of crusts or scutula, which are cup-shaped crusts with hair passing through the center. This condition is most commonly seen in children and is often associated with poor hygiene and living conditions.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of Trichophyton schoenleinii infection is typically made through direct microscopic examination of the infected hair and scalp debris. The fungus can be cultured in the laboratory on Sabouraud agar or Dermatophyte Test Medium (DTM).

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment of Trichophyton schoenleinii infection typically involves the use of oral antifungal medication, such as griseofulvin or terbinafine. Topical antifungal creams or shampoos may also be used in conjunction with oral medication.

Epidemiology[edit | edit source]

Trichophyton schoenleinii is found worldwide, but is most common in North Africa, the Middle East, and India. It is less common in Europe and North America.
