Valdez is a city in the U.S. state of Alaska. Located in the Valdez-Cordova Census Area, the city is one of the most important ports in Alaska. Valdez is known for its significant role in the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System, as it is the southern terminus of the pipeline.

Valdez is located at the head of a deep fjord in the Prince William Sound in Alaska. It is surrounded by the Chugach Mountains, which are the most coastal mountains in North America and have the highest average rainfall in the country.

History[edit | edit source]

The city was named after Antonio Valdés y Fernández Bazán, a Spanish naval officer. Valdez was a gateway to the interior of Alaska during the gold rush period and has a rich history linked to the oil industry.
