Vocal cord dysfunction familial

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Vocal Cord Dysfunction Familial (VCD-F) is a rare medical condition affecting the vocal cords. It is characterized by inappropriate vocal cord motion that can lead to episodes of difficulty breathing or stridor, which is a high-pitched wheezing sound resulting from disrupted airflow. Unlike more common forms of Vocal Cord Dysfunction (VCD), which can be acquired due to irritants, stress, or exercise, familial VCD suggests a genetic predisposition within families.

Symptoms and Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

The primary symptom of VCD-F is an abrupt onset of difficulty breathing, often accompanied by a stridor. This can be mistaken for asthma, leading to misdiagnosis and treatment that is not effective. Other symptoms may include cough, throat tightness, and voice changes. Diagnosis of VCD-F involves a thorough medical history and physical examination, with particular attention to family history. Confirmatory tests may include laryngoscopy, which allows direct visualization of the vocal cords during episodes, and pulmonary function tests to rule out asthma.

Causes[edit | edit source]

The exact cause of Familial Vocal Cord Dysfunction is not well understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. The familial occurrence suggests a hereditary component, although specific genes have not been identified.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment of VCD-F focuses on managing symptoms and preventing triggers. Speech therapy is often effective in teaching patients how to control their vocal cord movements. Breathing exercises can also help manage symptoms. In some cases, psychological counseling is recommended to address any stress or anxiety contributing to the condition.

Prognosis[edit | edit source]

With appropriate management, individuals with VCD-F can lead normal, active lives. However, it is important for patients and their families to be educated about the condition and its management to prevent unnecessary interventions and to ensure quick response to symptoms.
