WVU

WVU or West Virginia University is a public, land-grant, research university with its main campus in Morgantown, West Virginia. Its other campuses include those in Beckley and Keyser, and a medical campus in Charleston. WVU is organized into 14 colleges and schools offering 350 majors.

History

West Virginia University was founded as a result of the Morrill Land-Grant Colleges Act which provided for the establishment of land-grant colleges in 1862. The university was officially opened on February 7, 1867, and was initially called the Agricultural College of West Virginia.

Academics

WVU offers 350 majors through its 14 colleges and schools. These include the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business and Economics, the College of Creative Arts, the College of Education and Human Services, the College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, the College of Law, the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences, the Reed College of Media, the School of Dentistry, the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing, the School of Pharmacy, the School of Public Health, and the Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design.

Athletics

WVU's athletic teams, known as the Mountaineers, compete in the Big 12 Conference. The university has won numerous national championships, including 17 NCAA Rifle Championships.

Notable alumni

WVU has produced many notable alumni, including NASA astronaut Jon McBride, and NFL player Sam Huff.
