The Wyandotte is a breed of domestic chicken originating in the United States. The Wyandotte is a dual-purpose breed, kept for its brown eggs and its yellow-skinned meat. It is a popular show bird, and has many color variants.

The Wyandotte breed was first exhibited in the 1870s by H.M. Doubleday, John Ray, L. Whittaker and Fred Houdlette in the United States. The breed was named for the indigenous Wyandot people of North America. The Wyandotte is considered an American breed, as it was developed in the United States.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Wyandottes are a hardy, dual-purpose breed. They are noted for their docile nature and attractive appearance. They are also known for their ability to adapt to various climates and housing situations. Wyandottes have a rounded appearance due to their broad feathers. They have a rose comb and the skin color is yellow. The earlobes, face, wattles and comb are all red.

There are several recognized varieties of Wyandotte, including the Silver Laced Wyandotte, the Golden Laced Wyandotte, the White Wyandotte, the Black Wyandotte, the Blue Wyandotte, the Buff Wyandotte, the Partridge Wyandotte, and the Silver Penciled Wyandotte.

Like all breeds of chicken, Wyandottes are susceptible to poultry diseases. Common health issues include Avian influenza, Marek's disease, and Coccidiosis. Regular health checks, good nutrition, and proper housing can help prevent many diseases.
