Aga Khan University (AKU) is a prestigious private university located in Karachi, Pakistan. It was founded in 1983 by Prince Karahim Aga Khan IV, the 49th Imam of the Nizari Ismaili community, with the aim of providing quality higher education and research in the fields of health sciences and teacher education in developing countries. The university has since expanded its operations to various countries, including the United Kingdom, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Afghanistan, and Syria, making it a truly international institution.

The foundation of Aga Khan University was part of the Aga Khan's vision to improve the quality of life in the developing world by promoting human development and uplifting the standards of healthcare education. The university started with the Faculty of Health Sciences, inaugurated in 1983, followed by the establishment of the Institute for Educational Development in 1993. Over the years, AKU has introduced various other faculties and institutes, including the School of Nursing and Midwifery, the Medical College, the Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations in London, and the Graduate School of Media and Communications in East Africa.
