Alonnisos

Alonnisos (also spelled Alonissos) is a Greek island located in the Aegean Sea. It is part of the Sporades island group and is known for its rich biodiversity, beautiful beaches, and the National Marine Park of Alonnisos.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Alonnisos is the third member of the Sporades, following Skiathos and Skopelos. The island is approximately 20 km long and 4.5 km wide. Its highest point, Kalovoulos, stands at 470 meters above sea level. The island's terrain is characterized by steep cliffs and hills, with a few flat areas primarily located near the coast.

The history of Alonnisos dates back to the prehistoric times. The island was initially inhabited by the Minoans, and later by the Mycenaeans. During the Byzantine period, Alonnisos was often attacked by pirates, which led to the creation of fortified settlements on the island. The island was also occupied by the Ottomans, and later became part of the newly formed Greek state in the 19th century.

The economy of Alonnisos is primarily based on tourism, fishing, and agriculture. The island is famous for its local products, including wine, honey, and olive oil. Alonnisos is also home to the largest marine park in Europe, the National Marine Park of Alonnisos, which attracts thousands of visitors each year.

Alonnisos has a rich cultural heritage, with numerous traditional festivals and events taking place throughout the year. The island is also known for its traditional architecture, with many old stone houses and narrow streets.
