American Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing cruelty towards animals. Established in 1866, it is one of the oldest animal welfare organizations in the United States.

History[edit | edit source]

The ASPCA was founded by Henry Bergh, a diplomat and philanthropist, on April 10, 1866 in New York City. Bergh believed that animals were entitled to kind and respectful treatment at the hands of humans, and that this was not a privilege to be granted but a right to be protected. The organization was the first of its kind in the Western Hemisphere.

Mission and Work[edit | edit source]

The ASPCA's mission is "to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States." The organization works towards its mission through a variety of programs, including animal rescue, adoption services, and advocacy for stronger animal protection laws.

The ASPCA operates a full-service animal hospital, adoption center, and mobile clinic outreach program in New York City. It also has a team of animal behaviorists who provide training and behavior advice to pet owners.

Advocacy[edit | edit source]

The ASPCA's advocacy efforts focus on three key areas: animal homelessness, animal cruelty and neglect, and public policy. The organization advocates for laws and policies that will improve the lives of animals, and it works to enforce existing animal protection laws.

Criticism and Controversy[edit | edit source]

Like many organizations, the ASPCA has faced criticism and controversy. Some critics argue that the organization spends too much money on fundraising and administration and not enough on its programs. Others have criticized the ASPCA for its euthanasia policies.
