Cardinal Fernandez

Anthony Soter Fernandez (22 April 1932 – 28 October 2020) was a Malaysian cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as the Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur from 1983 until his retirement in 2003. Fernandez was elevated to the rank of cardinal by Pope Francis in 2016, becoming the first Malaysian cardinal in the history of the Catholic Church.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Anthony Soter Fernandez was born in Sungai Petani, Kedah, Malaysia. He pursued his early education in his hometown before entering the seminary to study for the priesthood. Fernandez was ordained a priest on 10 December 1966, after completing his theological studies at the College General Major Seminary in Penang, Malaysia.

Priesthood and Episcopal Ministry[edit | edit source]

After his ordination, Fernandez served in various capacities within the diocese of Penang, including roles as a parish priest and as a teacher in the seminary. His pastoral work was marked by a deep commitment to the spiritual and social welfare of his parishioners.

In 1977, Fernandez was appointed as the Bishop of Penang. During his tenure, he was known for his efforts in promoting vocations to the priesthood and religious life, as well as for his involvement in social justice issues. He was particularly concerned with the rights and welfare of workers and the poor.

Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur[edit | edit source]

In 1983, Fernandez was appointed Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur, a position he held until his retirement in 2003. As archbishop, he continued his work in the areas of social justice, while also focusing on the development of the local church. He was instrumental in the formation of the Catholic Research Centre in Kuala Lumpur, which aimed to promote research and dialogue on issues affecting the church and society in Malaysia.

Cardinalate[edit | edit source]

On 9 October 2016, Pope Francis announced that he would be creating Fernandez a cardinal, a historic moment for the Catholic Church in Malaysia. He was officially made a cardinal on 19 November 2016, at a consistory held at the Vatican. As a cardinal, Fernandez held the titular church of Sant'Alberto Magno in Rome.

Death[edit | edit source]

Cardinal Anthony Soter Fernandez passed away on 28 October 2020, after a battle with cancer. His death was mourned by many within and beyond the Catholic community in Malaysia, who remembered him for his deep faith, pastoral sensitivity, and commitment to justice and peace.
