Auberge de Bavière is a historic building located in Valletta, the capital city of Malta. It was originally built in the late 16th century and has served various purposes throughout its history, most notably as a residence for knights of the Order of Saint John from the Bavarian langue, hence its name which translates to "Bavarian Inn".

History[edit | edit source]

The Auberge de Bavière's origins can be traced back to the period when the Knights Hospitaller (also known as the Knights of Malta) ruled over the islands. The knights were organized into langues based on nationality or region, and the Auberge served as the lodging and meeting place for members of the Bavarian langue. The building was constructed in the 1570s but underwent significant modifications and expansions in the 18th century, particularly under the patronage of Grand Master Emmanuel de Rohan-Polduc.

Throughout the years, the Auberge de Bavière has been repurposed several times. After the departure of the Knights of Malta in 1798, following Napoleon Bonaparte's capture of the island, the building has served as a military hospital, a barracks, and a school, among other uses. Today, it houses government offices and is recognized as a valuable piece of Malta's architectural and historical heritage.

Architecture[edit | edit source]

The architecture of the Auberge de Bavière reflects the military and hospitaller character of its original occupants. The building showcases a blend of Maltese baroque and traditional Hospitaller architecture, with robust and functional elements designed to accommodate the knights' communal living arrangements. Notable features include its grand facade, spacious courtyards, and the emblem of the Bavarian langue prominently displayed.

Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]

The Auberge de Bavière is an important cultural landmark in Valletta, contributing to the city's status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It stands as a testament to the rich history of the Knights Hospitaller in Malta and their influence on the island's architectural and social landscape. The building's preservation and continued use demonstrate Malta's commitment to maintaining its historical sites while adapting them to contemporary needs.
