Augustin Thompson (November 25, 1835 – June 8, 1903) was an American physician and businessman best known for creating the popular beverage Moxie. He was born in Union, Maine and later moved to Lowell, Massachusetts, where he spent much of his professional life.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Thompson was born in Union, Maine, and grew up in a rural setting. He pursued his early education in local schools before attending the Maine Medical School at Bowdoin College, where he graduated with a medical degree in 1867.

Medical Career[edit | edit source]

After completing his education, Thompson began practicing medicine in Lowell, Massachusetts. He was known for his innovative approaches to treatment and his interest in developing new medicinal products. His medical practice was highly regarded, and he became a well-respected figure in the community.

Creation of Moxie[edit | edit source]

In 1876, Thompson developed a patent medicine called "Moxie Nerve Food," which he claimed could cure a variety of ailments. The original formula included ingredients such as gentian root, which was believed to have medicinal properties. Over time, Moxie evolved from a medicinal tonic to a popular soft drink. By the late 19th century, Moxie had become one of the most popular beverages in the United States, rivaling Coca-Cola.

Thompson's success with Moxie allowed him to expand his business ventures. He established the Moxie Nerve Food Company, which later became the Moxie Beverage Company. The company was headquartered in Lowell, Massachusetts, and played a significant role in the local economy.
