Plot Summary[edit | edit source]

The story begins with Michael Noonan, who is devastated by the unexpected death of his wife. Struggling with writer's block and haunted by nightmares, Noonan decides to return to Sara Laughs, his remote summer home. There, he becomes involved in a custody battle involving a young widow named Mattie Devore and her daughter Kyra. Mattie is fighting against her wealthy father-in-law, Max Devore, who wishes to take Kyra away from her. As Noonan gets closer to Mattie and Kyra, he starts experiencing supernatural occurrences and discovers that the spirits of Sara Laughs are restless.

Through a series of events, Noonan uncovers the secrets of the town's past, including racial tensions, forbidden love, and a series of mysterious deaths. He realizes that his late wife, Jo, had been investigating these secrets before her death and that her spirit is trying to communicate with him to resolve the unfinished business.

Themes[edit | edit source]
