From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Balmenach Distillery is a whisky distillery located in Speyside, Scotland. It is owned by Inver House Distillers Limited, a subsidiary of International Beverage Holdings Limited. The distillery produces a range of single malt Scotch whisky and is also a key component in the production of blended whisky.

History[edit | edit source]

The Balmenach Distillery was established in 1824 by James Gordon and John Alexander MacPherson. It was one of the first distilleries in Scotland to be legally licensed for the production of whisky following the Excise Act of 1823. The distillery has changed hands several times over the years, with ownership passing to Glenlivet Distilleries Ltd. in 1922, Distillers Company Limited in 1952, and finally to its current owner, Inver House Distillers, in 1997.

Production[edit | edit source]

The distillery sources its water from the Ben Rinnes mountain range. The production process at Balmenach includes mashing, fermentation, distillation, and maturation. The distillery has three wash stills and three spirit stills, with a total production capacity of approximately 2 million litres of alcohol per year.

Products[edit | edit source]

The core product of the distillery is the Balmenach Single Malt Scotch Whisky, which is aged in oak casks for a minimum of 12 years. The distillery also produces a range of other whiskies, including a 25-year-old single malt and a 30-year-old single malt. In addition to its single malts, Balmenach is a key component in the production of several blended whiskies, including Hankey Bannister.
