Basti District is a district located in the Uttar Pradesh state of India. The district is part of the Basti Division and has a rich history dating back to ancient times. The administrative headquarters of the district is in the town of Basti.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Basti District is situated in the eastern part of Uttar Pradesh, sharing its borders with Siddharthnagar District to the north, Sant Kabir Nagar District to the east, Ambedkar Nagar District to the south, and Gorakhpur District to the west. The district covers an area of approximately 2,687 square kilometers. The region is characterized by a flat terrain with fertile land, primarily due to the presence of the Ghaghara River and its tributaries.

The history of Basti District is deeply intertwined with the broader history of the region, including its significance during the Vedic period and its role in the epic narratives of the Mahabharata.
