Bei Shizhang

Bei Shizhang (October 10, 1903 – October 29, 2009) was a pioneering Chinese biologist and educator, renowned for his foundational contributions to the field of cytology in China. His work laid the groundwork for modern biological research in the country, and he is often celebrated as one of the founding figures of Chinese cytology.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Bei Shizhang was born in Zhenhai, Zhejiang Province, in 1903. From a young age, he showed a keen interest in the natural sciences. Pursuing this passion, Bei went on to study at Tsinghua University, where he majored in biology. After completing his undergraduate studies, Bei was awarded a scholarship to study abroad, which led him to the University of Berlin in Germany. There, he focused on cytology, the branch of biology concerned with the structure and function of plant and animal cells.

Career and Contributions[edit | edit source]

Upon returning to China, Bei Shizhang dedicated himself to research and education. He played a crucial role in establishing the Institute of Biophysics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, where he served as its first director. His research primarily focused on cell structure, cell division, and the effects of radiation on cells. Bei's work significantly advanced the understanding of cell biology in China and inspired a generation of Chinese biologists.

In addition to his research, Bei was deeply committed to education. He was instrumental in founding the Department of Biology at Peking University, one of the first of its kind in China. Throughout his career, Bei Shizhang authored numerous textbooks and scientific papers, making complex biological concepts accessible to students and researchers alike.
