Beney-en-Woëvre

Beney-en-Woëvre is a commune in the Meuse department in the Grand Est region in northeastern France. It is located approximately 20 kilometers east of Verdun, a city known for its significant role in World War I.

Beney-en-Woëvre has a rich history, particularly in relation to World War I. The commune was the site of heavy fighting during the Battle of Verdun in 1916. The area was completely destroyed and was declared a "red zone" after the war due to the extensive damage and the danger of unexploded ordnance.

Geography[edit | edit source]

The commune is located in the Woëvre plain, a large natural region of Lorraine. It is bordered by the communes of Manheulles to the north, Hannonville-sous-les-Côtes to the east, Billy-sous-Mangiennes to the south, and Dommartin-la-Montagne to the west.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the latest census, the population of Beney-en-Woëvre is approximately 100 residents, making it one of the smallest communes in the Meuse department.
