Bobby Fischer (March 9, 1943 – January 17, 2008) was an American chess grandmaster and the eleventh World Chess Champion. He is considered one of the greatest players in the history of the game.

Early life[edit | edit source]

Fischer was born in Chicago, Illinois, to a Jewish mother and a father of German-Hungarian descent. He showed an early aptitude for chess, learning the game at the age of six and winning the U.S. Junior Chess Championship at the age of 13.

Chess career[edit | edit source]

Fischer's chess career was marked by numerous accomplishments. He won the U.S. Chess Championship eight times, a record that still stands. In 1972, he became the first American to win the World Chess Championship, defeating Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union in a match held in Reykjavík, Iceland. This victory was seen as a symbolic Cold War victory and greatly increased the popularity of chess in the United States.

Fischer was known for his aggressive and innovative play. He was also known for his controversial behavior, both on and off the chessboard. He made numerous demands of chess organizers, often refused to play in tournaments if his conditions were not met, and was critical of the chess establishment.

Later life and death[edit | edit source]

After winning the World Championship, Fischer largely withdrew from competitive chess. He lived in various countries, including Hungary and Iceland, and became known for his anti-American and anti-Semitic statements. He died in Reykjavík in 2008.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Fischer's impact on the game of chess is immense. His victory over Spassky in 1972 sparked a chess boom in the United States. His games, particularly his mastery of the opening and endgame, continue to be studied by chess players around the world.
