History[edit | edit source]

The Bomb Pop was invented in 1955 by D.S. "Doc" Abernethy and James S. Merritt in Kansas City, Missouri. The duo were working for the Merritt Foods company when they created the iconic frozen treat. The original Bomb Pop was a three-flavored ice pop, with each layer representing a different flavor: cherry, lime, and blue raspberry. The design was intended to resemble a rocket or a firework, which is where the name "Bomb Pop" comes from.
