Bovale Grande

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Bovale Grande is a red wine grape variety that is grown primarily in the Sardinian region of Italy. It is also known by other names such as Bovaleddu, Bovale di Spagna, and Muristellu.

History[edit | edit source]

The origins of Bovale Grande are believed to be Spanish, and it was likely brought to Sardinia by the Aragonese during their rule in the 14th and 15th centuries. The grape is often confused with the Bovale Sardo variety, which is also grown in Sardinia, but DNA profiling has confirmed that they are distinct varieties.

Viticulture[edit | edit source]

Bovale Grande is a late-ripening grape that requires a warm climate to fully mature. It is resistant to many common grape diseases, making it a relatively easy variety to cultivate. The grape clusters are medium-sized and compact, with small, round berries that have a thick skin.

Wine Production[edit | edit source]

Bovale Grande is used both in blends and varietal wines. It is often blended with other Sardinian grape varieties such as Cannonau and Carignano. The grape produces wines with high tannin levels and moderate acidity, with flavors of red fruit and spice.

Appellations[edit | edit source]

Bovale Grande is included in several Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) wines in Sardinia, including the Mandrolisai DOC and the Campidano di Terralba DOC.

Synonyms[edit | edit source]

In addition to Bovaleddu, Bovale di Spagna, and Muristellu, Bovale Grande is also known under the synonyms Bovale Mannu and Bovale Grande di Spagna.
