CSU is known for its commitment to excellence in higher education, research, and engagement with the communities it serves. The university offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional programs, with a particular focus on agriculture, education, and health sciences, including medical education.

History[edit | edit source]

Charles Sturt University was formed through the merger of several existing institutions, including the Mitchell College of Advanced Education in Bathurst, the Riverina-Murray Institute of Higher Education in Albury, and the Riverina College of Advanced Education in Wagga Wagga. This amalgamation was part of a national move to reform higher education by creating larger institutions through the merger of smaller colleges and schools.

The university offers a diverse range of academic programs across various fields of study. Its faculties include the Faculty of Arts and Education, the Faculty of Business, Justice, and Behavioural Sciences, the Faculty of Science, and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. CSU is particularly noted for its Veterinary Science program, which is among the most respected in Australia and internationally.

Charles Sturt University is committed to conducting research that has a real-world impact, particularly in areas related to rural and regional Australia. Its research centers and institutes focus on areas such as water policy, agriculture, and public and allied health, contributing significantly to the body of knowledge in these fields.

Community Engagement[edit | edit source]

CSU is deeply engaged with the communities it serves, with a strong emphasis on improving the social, economic, and environmental well-being of regional and rural areas. The university's community engagement initiatives include providing access to higher education for underrepresented groups, working with Indigenous communities, and supporting local industry and business.

Medical Education[edit | edit source]

The university's commitment to health sciences is exemplified by its School of Medicine, which aims to address the shortage of medical professionals in rural and regional areas. The medical program focuses on producing graduates with a strong foundation in medical science, along with the skills and attitudes necessary for a successful career in medicine, particularly in underserved communities.
