Chromium Alum is a chemical compound with the formula KCr(SO₄)₂·12H₂O. It is a type of alum, a class of compounds characterized by their crystalline structure and high solubility in water. Chromium alum is distinguished by its deep purple color, a trait that makes it easily recognizable among other alums. This compound is primarily used in the fields of photography, tanning, and in certain types of dyeing processes. The tanning industry uses chromium alum as a tanning agent for processing leather. The compound helps in cross-linking the collagen fibers in the hide, making the leather more durable and resistant to water and microbial attack.
