Drug store

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Drug store or pharmacy is a retail shop where pharmaceutical drugs are sold. In addition to prescription drugs, drug stores also sell over-the-counter medicines, health and beauty products, snacks, and sometimes items like household cleaning products and stationery.

History[edit | edit source]

The concept of the drug store has its roots in the ancient world, where apothecaries were often called upon to provide medicinal substances. The modern drug store evolved from these early apothecaries and has become a staple in communities around the world.

Services[edit | edit source]

Drug stores provide a variety of services, including the dispensing of prescription drugs, the sale of over-the-counter medicines, and often other health-related services such as blood pressure monitoring and immunizations. Some drug stores also offer additional services such as photo processing and the sale of general merchandise.

Regulation[edit | edit source]

Drug stores are heavily regulated by both federal and state laws. In the United States, for example, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) oversees the safety and efficacy of prescription drugs, while state pharmacy boards regulate the practice of pharmacy.
