Emtricitabine/rilpivirine/tenofovir disoproxil
Emtricitabine/rilpivirine/tenofovir disoproxil is a fixed-dose combination antiretroviral medication used in the treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS. It combines three antiretroviral agents: emtricitabine, rilpivirine, and tenofovir disoproxil.
Composition[edit | edit source]
The medication is a combination of three drugs:
- Emtricitabine: A nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) that interferes with the replication of the HIV virus.
- Rilpivirine: A non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) that also interferes with the replication of the HIV virus.
- Tenofovir disoproxil: Another NRTI that works in a similar way to emtricitabine.
Usage[edit | edit source]
Emtricitabine/rilpivirine/tenofovir disoproxil is used as part of combination therapy for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and children who weigh at least 35 kg. It is also used as a pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent HIV infection in people at high risk.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Common side effects include nausea, dizziness, insomnia, and abnormal dreams. Serious side effects may include liver problems, depression, and changes in bone mineral density.
