Fara DOC

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Fara DOC is an Italian wine from the Piedmont region in the northwestern corner of Italy. It is a Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) wine, which is a quality assurance label for Italian wines. The Fara DOC designation was granted in 1969, which means that wines bearing this label must adhere to certain production regulations in order to maintain the quality and authenticity of the wine.

History[edit | edit source]

The history of Fara DOC is intertwined with the history of winemaking in the Piedmont region. The area has a rich winemaking tradition that dates back to the times of the Ancient Romans. The Fara DOC designation was established to protect the unique characteristics of the wines produced in this region.

Production[edit | edit source]

Fara DOC wines are produced from a blend of Nebbiolo, Vespolina, and Uva Rara grapes. The Nebbiolo grape, also used in the famous Barolo and Barbaresco wines, is the dominant variety in the blend, making up at least 50% of the wine. The remaining percentage is made up of Vespolina and Uva Rara grapes.

The production regulations for Fara DOC wines also stipulate that the wines must be aged for a minimum of 34 months, with at least 12 of those months in wooden barrels. This aging process contributes to the complex flavors and aromas of the wine.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Fara DOC wines are known for their rich, full-bodied character. They typically have a deep ruby red color and a complex bouquet of aromas, including notes of red fruit, spices, and hints of vanilla. On the palate, these wines are dry, warm, and harmonious, with a persistent finish.

Pairing[edit | edit source]

Fara DOC wines pair well with a variety of dishes, particularly those from the Piedmont region. They are excellent with red meats, game, and mature cheeses. They also complement dishes with truffles, a specialty of the Piedmont region.
