Ferdinand von Hompesch zu Bolheim

Ferdinand von Hompesch zu Bolheim was a German nobleman who served as the 71st and last Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller from 1797 to 1798. Born in 1744 in the Holy Roman Empire, Hompesch was elected Grand Master at a time when the Order faced significant challenges.

During his brief tenure, Hompesch attempted to navigate the turbulent political landscape of the late 18th century, marked by the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte and the French Revolutionary Wars. His leadership was tested by the French invasion of Malta in 1798, which ultimately led to the surrender of the island and the end of the Order's rule there.

Following the loss of Malta, Hompesch abdicated as Grand Master and retired to Trieste, where he lived out the remainder of his life in relative obscurity. He died in 1805, marking the end of his involvement with the Knights Hospitaller.

Despite his short-lived leadership, Ferdinand von Hompesch zu Bolheim's legacy is remembered as the Grand Master who presided over the Order during a tumultuous period in its history.
