Folle blanche is a white grape variety primarily grown in the Cognac and Armagnac regions of France. It is known for its use in the production of brandy, particularly in the creation of Armagnac and Cognac. The grape is also used in the production of Pineau des Charentes, a type of fortified wine.

History[edit | edit source]

Folle blanche has a long history in the French wine industry. It was once the dominant grape variety in the Cognac and Armagnac regions before the arrival of the phylloxera epidemic in the late 19th century. The phylloxera pest devastated European vineyards, and many Folle blanche vines were replaced with more resistant varieties such as Ugni blanc.

Viticulture[edit | edit source]

Folle blanche is a vigorous vine that produces high yields. It is known for its susceptibility to mildew and grey rot, which can make it challenging to cultivate. The grape thrives in sandy and clay soils, which are prevalent in the Cognac and Armagnac regions.

Wine Regions[edit | edit source]

Cognac[edit | edit source]

In the Cognac region, Folle blanche is used to produce eau-de-vie, which is then aged to create Cognac. Although it has been largely replaced by Ugni blanc, some producers still use Folle blanche for its unique flavor profile.

Armagnac[edit | edit source]

Folle blanche is more commonly found in the Armagnac region, where it is valued for its ability to produce high-quality brandy. The grape contributes to the floral and fruity characteristics of Armagnac.

Other Regions[edit | edit source]

Folle blanche is also grown in other parts of France, including the Loire Valley, where it is used to produce Gros Plant du Pays Nantais, a type of dry white wine.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Folle blanche wines are typically high in acidity and have a light body. The grape is known for its floral and fruity aromas, which can include notes of apple, pear, and citrus. These characteristics make it well-suited for distillation into brandy.

Synonyms[edit | edit source]

Folle blanche is known by several other names, including Picpoule, Gros Plant, and Enrageat blanc.
