Fomes noxius

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Fomes noxius is a species of fungus in the family Polyporaceae. It is a wood-decay fungus, causing a disease known as brown root rot in various tree species. The fungus is native to Asia, but has been introduced to other parts of the world, where it is considered an invasive species.

Taxonomy[edit | edit source]

The species was first described scientifically by mycologist T.T. Chang and W.N. Chou in 1965. The specific epithet noxius is Latin for "harmful", referring to the damage this fungus can cause to trees.

Description[edit | edit source]

Fomes noxius forms fruit bodies that are perennial and woody, with a flat, hoof-shaped cap. The underside of the cap features small pores, through which the fungus releases its spores. The fruit bodies are typically found at the base of infected trees.

Distribution and habitat[edit | edit source]

Fomes noxius is native to Asia, where it is widely distributed. It has been introduced to other parts of the world, including North America and Australia, where it is considered an invasive species. The fungus primarily infects hardwood trees, but can also infect some species of conifers.

Pathogenicity[edit | edit source]

Fomes noxius is a pathogenic fungus, causing a disease known as brown root rot. The fungus infects trees through wounds in the roots, and causes decay of the heartwood. Infected trees often show symptoms such as reduced growth, yellowing leaves, and premature leaf drop. In severe cases, the disease can lead to the death of the tree.

Control[edit | edit source]

Control of Fomes noxius involves a combination of preventative measures and treatment of infected trees. Preventative measures include avoiding wounding of trees, and removal of infected trees to prevent spread of the fungus. Treatment of infected trees can involve use of fungicides, or in severe cases, removal of the tree.
