Frigate tuna

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Frigate tuna (Auxis thazard), also known as the frigate mackerel, is a species of tuna that belongs to the mackerel family, Scombridae. It is a highly migratory species, found in warm seas worldwide.

Description[edit | edit source]

The frigate tuna is a small, slender fish, typically measuring 50 cm in length, although some individuals can reach up to 65 cm. It has a dark blue back, silver sides and belly, and a series of dark, diagonal lines on the back of its body. The species is distinguished by its long, slender body and deeply forked tail.

Distribution and habitat[edit | edit source]

Frigate tuna are found in warm, tropical and subtropical oceans worldwide. They are highly migratory and can be found in both coastal and offshore waters. They prefer surface temperatures of 18-30°C and are often found near the surface of the water.

Diet[edit | edit source]

The diet of the frigate tuna consists mainly of small fish, squid, and crustaceans. They are known to feed in schools and are capable of rapid, short bursts of speed to catch their prey.

Reproduction[edit | edit source]

Frigate tuna are broadcast spawners, releasing their eggs and sperm into the water where fertilization occurs. The eggs are buoyant and hatch within a few days. The larvae are planktonic and are carried by ocean currents until they are large enough to swim on their own.

Commercial importance[edit | edit source]

Frigate tuna are commercially important and are caught in large numbers by commercial fisheries around the world. They are caught using a variety of methods, including purse seine, longline, and trolling. The meat is used for canning, as well as for fresh and frozen products.

Conservation status[edit | edit source]

The IUCN has listed the frigate tuna as Least Concern due to its wide distribution and large population. However, overfishing is a concern and management measures are needed to ensure the sustainability of the species.
