George W. Carey

George W. Carey (1845–1924) was an American physician known for his unorthodox approach to medicine, particularly his theory on biochemistry and its relation to health. Carey's work, largely developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, posits that the human body operates on a biochemical level, with each cell and tissue type corresponding to a specific chemical element. His theories, while not widely accepted by the mainstream medical community, have influenced various alternative health practices and continue to be of interest to those studying the history of medicine and alternative health theories.

Biography[edit | edit source]

George Washington Carey was born in 1845. Little is documented about his early life and education, but it is known that he became interested in the connection between biochemistry and health at an early stage in his career. Carey believed that by understanding the chemical constituents of the body, one could address health issues more effectively than through conventional medicine.

Throughout his career, Carey wrote several books and articles expounding his theories. Among his most notable works is "The Biochemic System of Medicine," which outlines his belief that health can be maintained and diseases cured by balancing the twelve inorganic salts found in the body. This concept was inspired by the work of German physician Wilhelm Heinrich Schüßler, who also believed in the healing power of mineral salts.

Theories and Influence[edit | edit source]

Carey's theories revolve around the idea that the human body is a complex chemical laboratory, where each element plays a crucial role in maintaining health. He argued that imbalances or deficiencies in these chemical elements lead to disease and that by restoring balance through diet and supplementation, one could achieve optimal health.

Despite the skepticism of the medical establishment, Carey's ideas found a receptive audience among those interested in alternative health practices. His work has influenced the fields of naturopathy, homeopathy, and holistic medicine, where the focus is on treating the whole person rather than just symptoms.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

While George W. Carey is not a household name in the realm of medicine, his contributions to the field of alternative health have endured. His theories on biochemistry and health continue to be studied and practiced by those who seek natural methods of healing and wellness. Carey's work serves as a reminder of the diverse perspectives and approaches that have shaped the understanding of health and medicine throughout history.
