Giovanni Maria Lancisi (26 October 1654 – 20 January 1720) was an Italian physician, epidemiologist, and anatomist who is best known for his work in the fields of cardiology and infectious diseases. Early Life and Education

Giovanni Maria Lancisi was born in Rome, Italy, on 26 October 1654. He received his early education in his hometown before moving to the University of Rome to study medicine. He graduated with a degree in medicine in 1672.

He quickly gained a reputation for his skill and knowledge, and in 1688, he was appointed as the personal physician to Pope Innocent XI. He continued to serve in this role for the next three popes, Pope Innocent XII, Pope Clement XI, and Pope Innocent XIII.

He was one of the first physicians to recognize the connection between mosquitos and malaria, and he worked tirelessly to combat the disease in Rome.
