Giraffe World Kitchen was founded in 1998 by Juliette Joffe, Russel Joffe, and Andrew Jacobs. The trio aimed to create a dining experience that offered a variety of dishes from around the world. The first restaurant was opened in Hampstead, North London.

In 2013, the chain was acquired by Tesco, a multinational groceries and general merchandise retailer. However, in 2016, Tesco sold the chain to Boparan Restaurant Group.
