Happy Science (Japanese: 幸福の科学, Kōfuku no Kagaku) is a new religious movement and spiritual organization founded in Japan in 1986 by Ryuho Okawa. It is known for its blend of Eastern and Western religious philosophies, self-help teachings, and a claimed commitment to bringing happiness to humanity through spiritual awakening and understanding. The organization has been subject to both criticism and support for its practices, teachings, and the influence it exerts on its followers.

Beliefs and Teachings[edit | edit source]

Happy Science's teachings are based on the spiritual messages and principles taught by Ryuho Okawa, who is regarded by his followers as a divine figure. The core beliefs of Happy Science include the existence of an eternal spiritual realm, the importance of love, wisdom, self-reflection, and progress, both spiritually and materially. The organization promotes the idea that individuals can achieve happiness and enlightenment through the practice of its teachings, which are often disseminated through books, lectures, and seminars.

One of the central texts of Happy Science is The Laws of the Sun, which outlines the creation of the universe, the spiritual laws that govern it, and the path to enlightenment. Other significant teachings include the concepts of reincarnation, karma, and the existence of a spiritual hierarchy that includes various deities and enlightened beings.

Activities and Outreach[edit | edit source]

Happy Science conducts a wide range of activities aimed at spreading its teachings and supporting its members' spiritual growth. These include public lectures, spiritual workshops, and the publication of spiritual texts. The organization also engages in educational and charitable activities, including the operation of schools and the provision of aid in times of disaster.

In addition to its spiritual and educational endeavors, Happy Science has also made forays into politics and media. It has a political wing, the Happiness Realization Party, which advocates for policies aligned with the organization's beliefs and values. Happy Science has also produced a number of films and other media content to promote its teachings and worldview.

Controversies[edit | edit source]

Happy Science has been the subject of controversy and criticism, particularly in relation to its recruitment practices, financial demands on members, and the claims made by its leader. Critics have accused the organization of being a cult, exploiting its followers, and spreading misinformation. Happy Science, however, denies these accusations and maintains that it is a legitimate religious movement dedicated to the betterment of society.
