Hemagglutination tests

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Hemachatus haemachatus is a species of elapid snake commonly known as the ringhals or ring-necked spitting cobra. It is native to the savannas and grasslands of Southern Africa, and is known for its unique ability to spit venom at its predators.

Description[edit | edit source]

The Hemachatus haemachatus is a medium-sized snake, typically reaching lengths of 1.2 to 1.5 meters. It is easily identifiable by its distinct neck bands, which are typically white or cream in color, contrasting with the rest of its dark body. The snake's body is cylindrical, and its scales are smooth and glossy.

Behavior[edit | edit source]

The Hemachatus haemachatus is a nocturnal species, preferring to hunt and be active during the cooler hours of the night. It is known for its aggressive nature, especially when threatened. Its primary defense mechanism is its ability to spit venom, which it does with remarkable accuracy. The venom is primarily used for defense rather than for hunting.

Venom[edit | edit source]

The venom of the Hemachatus haemachatus is a potent neurotoxin, capable of causing severe pain, blindness, and even death in extreme cases. The venom is ejected from the snake's fangs in a spray, and is aimed at the eyes of the threat. Immediate medical attention is required if venom enters the eyes or if a person is bitten.

Habitat and Distribution[edit | edit source]

The Hemachatus haemachatus is found in the grasslands and savannas of Southern Africa, including countries such as South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. It prefers areas with tall grass where it can hide and hunt for its prey, which includes rodents, amphibians, and other small animals.

Conservation Status[edit | edit source]

The Hemachatus haemachatus is currently listed as a species of Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. However, like many snake species, it faces threats from habitat loss and human persecution.
