iPhone 3G is the second generation of iPhone, a line of smartphones designed and marketed by Apple Inc.. It was introduced on June 9, 2008, at the WWDC 2008 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, United States, by then-CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs. The iPhone 3G was released on July 11, 2008, and it succeeded the first generation iPhone, offering new features such as 3G data connectivity and Assisted GPS. The device was available in 8GB and 16GB models.

Design[edit | edit source]

The iPhone 3G introduced a new design compared to its predecessor, featuring a full plastic back to improve signal strength. It retained the 3.5-inch display with a resolution of 320x480 pixels but introduced a more curved form factor. The device also maintained the iconic home button, speaker, and microphone placements.

Features[edit | edit source]

One of the most significant features introduced with the iPhone 3G was support for 3G networks, which allowed for faster internet browsing, downloads, and streaming compared to the EDGE network used by the first-generation iPhone. Additionally, the iPhone 3G included Assisted GPS for enhanced location services and the introduction of the App Store, which significantly expanded the phone's capabilities through third-party applications.

The iPhone 3G ran on iPhone OS 2.0, which was later renamed iOS in subsequent versions. This operating system introduced support for Microsoft Exchange, App Store access, and push email, among other features.

Reception[edit | edit source]

The iPhone 3G received positive reviews for its improved internet speeds, GPS functionality, and the introduction of the App Store, which was seen as a game-changer for mobile platforms. However, some criticism was directed at its battery life and call quality.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

The iPhone 3G is considered a significant milestone in the iPhone lineup and the smartphone industry. It marked Apple's first step towards creating a more accessible and versatile mobile platform through the App Store. The device was succeeded by the iPhone 3GS in 2009, which offered improved performance, a better camera, and video recording capabilities.
