Ivory (mango)

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Ivory is a mango cultivar that originated in the tropical regions of South Florida. The cultivar is known for its bright white color, hence the name 'Ivory'. It is also known as the 'Angie' mango, a name derived from the wife of the hybridizer.

Description[edit | edit source]

The Ivory mango is a fiberless variety, with a creamy texture and a rich, sweet flavor. The fruit is medium to large in size, typically weighing between 1 and 2 pounds. The skin of the Ivory mango is smooth and bright white, with a slight yellow blush when fully ripe. The flesh is also white, with a slight yellow hue near the pit.

History[edit | edit source]

The Ivory mango was first cultivated in South Florida in the late 20th century. It is a hybrid variety, created by crossing the 'Kent' and 'Keitt' cultivars. The hybridizer named the new variety 'Angie' in honor of his wife, but it is more commonly known as the 'Ivory' due to its distinctive color.

Cultivation[edit | edit source]

Ivory mango trees are medium-sized, typically reaching heights of 15 to 20 feet. They are well-suited to the tropical and subtropical climates of South Florida, but can also be grown in other regions with similar climates. The trees are moderately resistant to Anthracnose, a common fungal disease that affects mango trees.

The Ivory mango is a mid-season variety, with fruit typically ripening from June to August. The fruit is best harvested when the skin begins to turn from white to a slight yellow blush. Once harvested, the fruit can be stored at room temperature until fully ripe.

Uses[edit | edit source]

The Ivory mango is primarily consumed fresh, but can also be used in a variety of culinary applications. Its sweet, creamy flesh makes it ideal for use in mango salsas, mango smoothies, and other mango-based dishes. The fruit's distinctive color also makes it a popular choice for decorative fruit platters.
