Joanne Rowling (born 31 July 1965), better known by her pen name J. K. Rowling, is a British author and philanthropist. She is best known for writing the Harry Potter series, which has won multiple awards and sold more than 500 million copies, becoming the best-selling book series in history. The books are the basis of a popular film series, over which Rowling had overall approval on the scripts and was a producer on the final films.
Early life[edit | edit source]
Rowling was born in Yate, Gloucestershire, England, and grew up in Chepstow, Gwent. She attended St Michael's Primary School and later Wyedean School and College. Rowling studied French and the Classics at the University of Exeter, graduating in 1986.
Career[edit | edit source]
Harry Potter series[edit | edit source]
Rowling conceived the idea for the Harry Potter series while on a delayed train from Manchester to London in 1990. Over the next five years, she mapped out the seven books of the series. The first novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, was published in 1997. The series concluded with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in 2007.
Other works[edit | edit source]
After the Harry Potter series, Rowling wrote several books for adult readers, including The Casual Vacancy and the Cormoran Strike series under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. She has also written the screenplay for the Fantastic Beasts film series, a prequel to the Harry Potter series.
Philanthropy[edit | edit source]
Rowling supports a wide range of charitable causes through her charitable trust, Volant Charitable Trust, and is the founder of the international children's charity Lumos. She has donated millions to various causes, including multiple sclerosis research and poverty alleviation.
Personal life[edit | edit source]
Rowling married Jorge Arantes in 1992, and they had one child before divorcing in 1995. She married Neil Murray in 2001, and they have two children together. Rowling lives in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Awards and honours[edit | edit source]
Rowling has received numerous awards and honours, including the OBE for services to children's literature, the Légion d'Honneur, and the Hans Christian Andersen Literature Award.
