He earned a degree in Dentistry from the University of Louisville School of Dentistry in 1955, after which he served in the United States Maritime Service and the United States Navy Reserve, achieving the rank of captain.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Edwards' political career began with his election to the South Carolina Senate in 1972, where he served until his gubernatorial campaign in 1974. After leaving public office, Edwards returned to South Carolina, where he became the president of the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in 1982, a position he held until his retirement in 1999.
