James Garner

Born James Scott Bumgarner on April 7, 1928, in Norman, Oklahoma, Garner had a tumultuous childhood marked by the early death of his mother. He dropped out of high school at 16 and joined the United States Merchant Marine, later serving in the Korean War.

Garner's breakthrough role came in the television series Maverick (1957-1962), where he portrayed the charming gambler Bret Maverick. The show's success catapulted him to stardom and established him as a leading man in Hollywood.

Throughout his career, Garner starred in a variety of films, including The Great Escape (1963), The Rockford Files (1974-1980), and Murphy's Romance (1985). His performances were characterized by his natural charisma and wit, earning him a reputation as a versatile actor.

Garner's work in television and film garnered him several awards, including two Primetime Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award. He was also inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.
