Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) is one of the leading medical institutions in India, renowned for its undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and medical research. Established by the French Government in 1823 as École de Médicine de Pondichéry, JIPMER was converted into a medical college in 1956 under the Indian government and later declared an Institute of National Importance in 2008 by an Act of Parliament.

History[edit | edit source]

The origins of JIPMER trace back to the French colonial period, with its inception as a medical school in 1823. It was transformed into Dhanvantari Medical College at the time of the de facto transfer of Pondicherry from France to India in 1956. Subsequently, it was renamed Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research, reflecting its enhanced focus on postgraduate medical education and research.

Campus[edit | edit source]

Located in Puducherry, a union territory in southern India, the JIPMER campus spreads over 195 acres. It includes a tertiary care referral hospital that provides low-cost medical care to a large number of patients. The campus is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including advanced research laboratories, a modern library, and residential quarters for faculty, staff, and students.

Academics[edit | edit source]

JIPMER offers a variety of undergraduate (MBBS), postgraduate (MD, MS), super-specialty (DM, MCh), and doctoral (Ph.D.) programs in various fields of medicine and health sciences. Admission to these programs is highly competitive, with candidates selected through a national-level entrance examination conducted by the institute itself.

The JIPMER Hospital is a major tertiary care center that provides high-quality, low-cost medical care to patients from the region and beyond. It has a capacity of over 2,000 beds and is equipped with advanced medical technologies and facilities.
