Kelantan is a state located in the northeastern part of Peninsular Malaysia. It is bordered by Narathiwat Province of Thailand to the north, Terengganu to the southeast, Perak to the west, and Pahang to the south. To the northeast, Kelantan faces the South China Sea. It is known for its rich Malay culture, Islamic heritage, and traditional crafts. The state capital is Kota Bharu.

History

Kelantan has a long history that dates back to prehistoric times. The state came under various influences, including the Buddhist Srivijaya empire and the Hindu Majapahit empire before becoming part of the Malay Sultanate of Malacca. After the fall of Malacca, Kelantan became a vassal state of the Pattani Kingdom, a powerful Malay kingdom. In the late 19th century, Kelantan became a British protectorate until the Federation of Malaya gained independence in 1957.
