La Paz is the administrative capital of Bolivia, as well as the departmental capital of the La Paz Department. It is located in the western part of the country, in the Andes mountains. With an elevation of roughly 3,650 m (11,975 ft) above sea level, La Paz is the highest capital city in the world.

La Paz was founded on October 20, 1548 by the Spanish conquistador Alonso de Mendoza. The city was originally named Nuestra Señora de La Paz (Our Lady of Peace) in commemoration of the restoration of peace following the insurrection of Gonzalo Pizarro and his followers against the first viceroy of Peru.

La Paz is located in the Andes mountain range, and its topography is characterized by steep hills and narrow valleys. The city's geography has a significant impact on its climate, which is classified as a subtropical highland climate.
