List of Spanish Dishes

Spanish cuisine is a reflection of the country's diverse history and culture. From the hearty stews of the central plains to the seafood delicacies along the coast, Spanish dishes offer a variety of flavors and techniques. This article provides a list of some of the most popular and traditional Spanish dishes.

Tapas[edit | edit source]

Tapas are a wide variety of appetizers, or snacks, in Spanish cuisine. They may be cold (such as mixed olives and cheese) or hot (such as chopitos, which are battered, fried baby squid). In select bars in Spain, tapas have evolved into an entire, sophisticated cuisine.

Paella[edit | edit source]

Paella is a Valencian rice dish that has ancient roots but its modern form originated in the mid-19th century in the area around the Albufera lagoon on the east coast of Spain adjacent to the city of Valencia. The dish is widely regarded as Spain's national dish, but Spaniards almost unanimously consider it to be a dish from the Valencian region.

Gazpacho[edit | edit source]

Gazpacho is a soup made of raw, blended vegetables. A classic of Andalusian cuisine, it originated in the southern regions of Spain such as Andalusia. It is a cold soup usually served during the summer months, due to its refreshing qualities.

Tortilla Española[edit | edit source]

Tortilla Española (Spanish Omelette) is a traditional Spanish dish originating from the Iberian Peninsula. It is made with eggs, potatoes, and onions, although there are many variations that include other ingredients such as bell peppers or chorizo.

Cocido Madrileño[edit | edit source]

Cocido Madrileño is a traditional chickpea-based stew from Madrid. The dish is a classic of the city's cuisine and is served in three courses, or vuelcos, first the broth with noodles, then the chickpeas and vegetables, and finally the meat.

Fabada Asturiana[edit | edit source]

Fabada Asturiana is a rich Spanish bean stew, originally from the autonomous community of the Principality of Asturias, but widely available throughout the whole of Spain and in Spanish restaurants worldwide.

Pisto[edit | edit source]

Pisto is a Spanish dish originally from the Region of Murcia and Castilla La Mancha. It is made of tomatoes, onions, eggplant or courgettes, green and red peppers and olive oil.

Pollo al ajillo[edit | edit source]

Pollo al ajillo (Garlic Chicken) is a popular Spanish dish which combines chicken pieces with garlic, white wine, and sometimes chilli.
